Delivering sustainability: an important part of reducing our carbon footprint is by using green transport. By increasing supply chain efficiency, deploying alternative modes of transport, and designing our products optimally, we are reducing our carbon footprint and are contributing to the sustainability ambitions of our customers.

“Transport accounts for 55% of our carbon footprint. We are therefore continuing to optimise our delivery distance and promote greener transportation. In 2022, we piloted several initiatives to determine their effectiveness. Based on these initiatives, we have identified two main strategies for 2023: using the train and using biodiesel.”

In 2022, we successfully piloted the transportation of pallets from the UK to the European continent via train, reducing the carbon footprint per journey by 85%. Based on this successful pilot as part of the CoolRail project, we have now established an international transport team to coordinate with train companies and explore further expansion.  We will also work towards transitioning this flow to 100% train transport. Our collaboration with TESCO, a UK- based retailer, has been instrumental in this success.

Our second strategic focus is biodiesel. At LPR, we believe biodiesel is the next big thing in green initiatives and will be exploring this further. Biodiesel is particularly successful in France and the Benelux, where it is not as expensive as regular diesel. Basically, with every euro we spent on biodiesel we saved 10 to 11 kg of CO2. For instance, this means that with one pilot in the Benelux, we reduced our Benelux carbon footprint by 15% in one year.

In addition, we are also exploring the possibilities of electric trucks. We currently have electric trucks available for short-haul routes in two areas that are well-suited to their deployment. However, for long-haul routes, we are still in the pilot phase. As this is still an emerging technology, we will keep monitoring this possibility. Our decision to work with one solution over another is based on maturity and the proven impact of the technology in question.

We set the ambition to reduce the carbon footprint for each rotation of our trays and pallets by 20% by 2025, in comparison to the baseline in 2017.
